Ugo Rondinone presents
MANUEL CANCEL Between Heaven and Earth
Studio Ugo Rondinone, 21 rue du Vieux Colombier, 75006 Paris
Opening hours 12 – 7 pm
Ugo Rondinone is pleased to present new paintings by Argentinian artist Manuel Cancel in his Paris studio. Based in Paris for over thirty years, Manuel Cancel (born 1951 in Buenos Aires, AR) continues to draw inspiration from the windswept pampas of his native South America, particularly the Patagonian highlands. Immersing himself in their vast landscapes, Cancel's art portrays his awe at the wonders of nature and the tranquillity and pristine beauty found in open spaces. His paintings evoke an endless expanse reminiscent of wide-angle photography. Using a vibrant palette of greens, greys, blues and oranges, he intricately paints vast grasslands that resemble ocean waves. Rooted in magic realism, his dreamlike landscapes evoke a sense of drama, loneliness, melancholy, and longing.
Cancel had solo exhibitions at institutions including Centro Cultural Borges, Buenos Aires, AR (2017); Salon d’Honneur Mairie du 20e, Paris, FR (2016); Landau Fine Art, Montréal, CA (2007); Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires, AR (1997); Art House, Buenos Aires, AR (1996; 1993); and Musée de la Mer, Biarritz, FR (1995). He participated in group exhibitions at institutions such as Galerie Yvon Lambert, Paris, FR (2018; 2009); Maison de l’Argentine, Cité Universitaire de Paris, Paris, FR (2018; 2015; 2014; 2013; 2011; 2009); Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires, AR (1998); Pace Wildenstein, New York, NY, US (1998); and Palais des Arts, École des Beaux Arts, Toulouse, FR (1985).
