Wyatt Kahn at Art Basel Parcours 2023
At Haus zum Raben (Picassoplatz 6, Basel), two sculptures by Wyatt Kahn, The Friends (2021) and Sideways Curl (2021), are co-presented with Xavier Hufkens.
Kahn transforms shapes, which he previously explored in his canvas works, into massive COR-TEN steel objects. Over the past ten years, he has examined the spatial relationship between painting and sculpture to construct a visual vocabulary of representational and abstract forms that integrate formal concerns with materials from our everyday life. The new works unite the geometric shapes from his earliest series of canvas paintings with oversized figurative “readymade” icons taken from the artist’s daily life, including a comb and phone, among others. Each component comprises numerous sections of steel that have been welded together into block-like forms, their front and back mirroring each other to create an illusion of drawing in space.
The series–comprising seven sculptures in total–was previously on view at City Hall Park in New York.
